It includes a guided self-preparation interview that asks users questions, determines applicable forms, performs calculations, and outputs a values sheet for manual filing. The software processes everything locally and never files, signs, or transmits tax returns.

The project structures each form as YAML files containing records with identifiers, IRS labels, expressions, and strict citations. Every citation links to an archived IRS document with a specific locator and hash. A build-time checker validates that all references resolve, prevents circular dependencies, and fails if citations are missing or invalid.

Calculations rely on a closed vocabulary of approximately twenty basic operations, such as addition, rounding, and table lookups. This design limits complexity and allows independent verification directly from the repository. The system tracks the IRS published procedures rather than the Internal Revenue Code itself.
